چکیده

A discrete Frenkel-Kontorova model with two alternate spring constants k1 and k2 is studied in detail. It is found that this model has a lots of surprising behaviors. The continuum version of this model is different from the sine-Gordon equation, which is the continuum version of the standard FK model. More interestingly, it has an unpinned commensurate phase which is translationally invariant and has a zero-frequency phonon mode. The model has a phase transition on phase space points, which form a square lattice determined by the two non-zero and non-negative solutions of the equation sin(2πx) = 0. Besides, we predict there is another more interesting phase transition of the unlocked commensurate phase which may break translational invariance, as the strength of the substrate potential is increased. PACS numbers: 05.50.+q, 0.5.70 Fh, 05.70.Jk

We solved the Frenkel-Kontorova model with the potential V (u) = − 2 |λ|(u− Int[u]− 1 2) 2 exactly. For given |λ|, there exists a positive integer qc such that for almost all values of the tensile force σ, the winding number ω of the ground state configuration is a rational number in the qc-th level Farey tree. For fixed ω = p/q, there is a critical λc when a first order phase transition occurs...

Dislocation Structures of Submonolayer Films near the Commensurate-Incommensurate Phase Transition: Ag on Pt(111)

Submonolayer films of Ag on Pt(111) exhibit parallel partial dislocations separated by narrow hcp domains and much wider fcc domains, the large difference in width being atypical of strained metal overlayers on close-packed substrates. Using a two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, we calculate the relative domain widths. We examine possible effects of dislocations on equilibrium island shape...

The Commensurate Incommensurate Transition

In condensed matter physics there are many successful models of phase transitions between a more ordered and less ordered state. Break a continuous symmetry and you’ve got yourself a cpmtomipus phase transition. Roughly speaking the transition occurs when the symmetry breaking potential term becomes the dominant one in the free energy and the system ‘contracts’ in phase space decreasing entropy...

Exactly solved Frenkel - Kontorova model with multiple subwells

We exactly solve a class of Frenkel-Kontorova models with a periodic potential composed of piecewise convex parabolas having the same curvature. All rotationally ordered stable configurations can be depicted with appropriate phase parameters. The elements of a phase parameter are grouped into subcommensurate clusters. Phase transitions, manifested in the gap structure changes previously seen in...
